Die große Britten-Jubiläumsedition geht weiter

Benjamin Britten war in vielerlei Hinsicht einer der bedeutendsten Komponisten des 20. Jahrhunderts. Ein besonderes Merkmal seines Schaffens war neben der seltenen Verbindung von Modernität und Eingängigkeit die ungeheure Vielfalt, die sein Schaffen auszeichnet. So darf bei der Würdigung seines Werks anlässlich von Brittens 100. Geburtstag seine Chormusik nicht fehlen. Dieser Werkbereich ist in der neuen Jubiläumsbox mit einer außergewöhnlichen Seite seines Vermächtnisses verbunden: mit seinen Kinderopern.

Britten war Komponist, Festivalgründer, ausübender Musiker – aber auch Pädagoge, der immer wieder Werke schrieb, die vor allem auf das junge Publikum abzielen. Sein berühmtestes, „The Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra“, ist nur eines von vielen, wie seine Kinderopern zeigen: So ist „The Little Sweep“ aus „Let´s Make an Opera“ geradezu ein Operngegenstück zum berühmteren Orchesterführer. Das Stück „Noye's Fludde“, das auf einem jahrhundertealten Mysterienspiel basiert, ist eigens für junge Amateurmusiker geschrieben. In den Stoffen zeigt sich Britten verwurzelt in den Traditionen der englischen Geschichte – und auch seine Chorwerke fußen auf der berühmten britischen Chortradition. Hauptwerk ist sein erschütterndes „War Requiem“, das hier in beispielhafter Einspielung unter Simon Rattle dokumentiert ist. Es steht Seite an Seite mit sakral fundierten Werken wie „Rejoice in the Lamb“, der „Ceremony of Carols“ oder der „Hymn to St Cecilia“ – authentisch dargeboten von erstklassigen Chören wie dem Choir of King's College Cambridge.
