Die triumphale Uraufführung von Georg Friedrich Händels Giulio Cesare in Egitto, die 1724 im King’s Theatre in London stattfand, verbindet meisterhaft menschliche Gefühle: Triumph mit Trauer, Verzweiflung mit Glück und Liebe mit tiefer Melancholie im Angesicht der Vergänglichkeit allen irdischen Lebens. Starregisseur Keith Warner hat eine Inszenierung geschaffen, die Stummfilm und Barockoper fantasievoll miteinander verbindet und dabei herrlich an Mankiewiczs legendäre Cleopatra mit Elizabeth Taylor, Rex Harrison und Richard Burton erinnert. Die hervorragende Sängerbesetzung wird von zwei der weltweit führenden Countertenöre angeführt: Bejun Mehta und Christophe Dumaux. Louise Alder brilliert als verführerische Kleopatra. Patricia Bardon, Simon Bailey und Jake Arditti sind weitere Highlights in dieser außergewöhnlichen Sängerriege, während Ivor Bolton am Pult des Concentus Musicus Wien für den passenden Soundtrack sorgt.
