Die sich ergänzenden Talente von Chet Baker (1929 - 1988) sowohl als Trompeter als auch als Sänger sind heute bekannt. Sowohl Chets Trompete als auch seine Stimme scheinen Erweiterungen derselben musikalischen Persönlichkeit zu sein, und sobald Sie sich mit beiden Facetten von Baker vertraut gemacht haben, erwarten Sie, sie beide zu hören.
Dieses Album war damals jedoch eine Offenbarung und brachte Baker neuen Ruhm und ein neues Publikum ein, das weniger mit Jazz als mit Popmusik vertraut war. Die Gründe liegen auf der Hand: Chets Stimme ist zart und schön, gleichzeitig swingt und überrascht seine Phrasierung immer wieder. Während Chet Baker Sings heute als Klassiker gilt und weiterhin ein Jazz-Bestseller ist, war seine anfänglich kritische Aufnahme nicht allzu gut, und viele renommierte Jazz-Kritiker missbilligten Chets Gesang als rau, unprofessionell und nicht männlich. Trotz dieser Meinungen hörte das Album nie auf, sich zu verkaufen, und seine Popularität war so groß, dass es nach der Erstveröffentlichung im Jahr 1954 als 10-Zoll-LP (Pacific Jazz LP11), die nur acht Titel enthielt, 1956 als 12-Zoll-LP (World Pacific PJ-1222) wieder auftauchte.
Diese beiden Original-LPs wurden in Mono aufgenommen, aber Chet Baker Sings hatte seine Popularität 1962 nicht verloren, als der neue Wahnsinn der Stereoaufnahmen einsetzte. Daher beschloss Pacific Jazz, die LP in Stereoform neu aufzulegen. Um dies zu erreichen, nahmen sie eine ergänzende Gitarrenbegleitung von Joe Pass auf und mischten sie mit den Original-Mono-Bändern. Das Ergebnis, das hier zu hören ist, war ein neues Album, das die Tracklisting-Reihenfolge seiner Mono- Vorgänger nicht respektierte. Während die 10-Zoll-Version acht Tracks und die 12- Zoll-Version 14 enthielt, enthielt die neue Stereo-Ausgabe 12 Melodien (drei Songs wurden aus dem 12-Zoll-Album entfernt und eine Version von »Someone to Watch Over Me« aus einer anderen Aufnahme hinzugefügt).

There are several Chet Baker albums with the title Chet Baker Sings, but this one recorded for Pacific Jazz in 1954 and 1956 is the original, and arguably, the best. The album features Chet’s indelible vocals and sterling trumpet playing with two different quartet line-ups both featuring pianist Russ Freeman on a set of classic standards that he made his own including “My Funny Valentine,” “That Old Feeling,” and “I Fall In Love Too Easily.” For the first time in more than 60 years, this definitive edition was cut from the original master tapes in the correct order with pristine fidelity. The gatefold packaging includes additional session photography by William Claxton.

The Blue Note Tone Poet Series was born out of Blue Note President Don Was’ admiration for the exceptional audiophile Blue Note LP reissues presented by Music Matters. Was brought Joe Harley (from Music Matters), a. k.a. the “Tone Poet,” on board to curate and supervise a series of reissues from the Blue Note family of labels.
Extreme attention to detail has been paid to getting these right in every conceivable way, from the jacket graphics and printing quality to superior LP mastering (direct from the master tapes) by Kevin Gray to superb 180 gm audiophile LP pressings by Record Technology Inc.
