Das vierte Studioalbum von The Police wurde im Oktober 1981 veröffentlicht und war die Nummer 1 der britischen Albumcharts und ein Multi-Platin-Bestseller.
Mit drei Hit-Singles - "Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic", "Invisible Sun" und "Spirits In The Material World" - wurden die Jazz-Einflüsse deutlicher, aber das Album hatte dank des Songwriting-Talents von Sting einen sehr starken, anspruchsvollen Pop-Appeal.
Zu den Höhepunkten des Albums gehören auch der bösartige Jazz-Rocker "Demolition Man" (später von Grace Jones gecovert), das rasante "Rehumanize Yourself" und zwei Balladen zum Abschluss des Albums - "Secret Journey" und "Darkness".
