Having departed folk-rock pioneers the Beau Brummels, in 1969 Sal Valentino joined this remarkable collective, managed by legendary San Francisco DJ Tom Donahue. Recorded as part of a benefit for the Haight-Ashbury Free Clinic in March 1971 (just as their classic debut album was about to hit stores), this superb set was originally broadcast on KSAN-FM. Capturing the band at the height of their powers, it’s presented here together with background notes and images, and is a quintessential artefact of the Californian hippie scene.

Zeitgenössische schöne ausgelassene Hippiemusik

Dieser Mitschnitt eines Radiobroadcasts ist sicher nichts für "High-End-Klang-Pedanten". Die Klang-Qualität entspricht eher der durchschnittlicher bis passabler Bootlegs aus dieser Zeit, dennoch ist das Konzert vom Sound her anhörbar. Und vor allem mitreissend! Es macht Freude. Es herrscht eine lockere Atmosphäre, die Band scheint -wie zu der Zeit üblich- bisschen was geraucht zu haben, aber/und spielt ein tolles Set. Rau, nicht perfekt, aber der "Spirit" stimmt. Was viele störend empfinden könnten, sind die kurzen Moderationen des Radio DJs Tom Donahue, die kurzen bekifften Smalltalks dazwischen. Es handelt sich offensichtlich um ein Benefizkonzert für ein Hospital, wo Radiohörer spenden und anrufen können. Da er aber eine angenehme Stimme hat, stört das Gequatsche gar nicht so sehr. Man kann sich die CD auch neu brennen und die Moderationen wegglassen, sie sind quasi als extra Tracks nummeriert. Ich selbst habe auch die anderen Platten der Band, natürlich auch das ebenfalls empfehlenswerte "Family-Album", aber ich ertappe mich dabei, dass ich meistens genau diesen Radio-Broadcast in Haight Ashbury bevorzuge. Es ist ein tolles Konzert, vielleicht ihr bester Livemitschnitt, und wer diese Art von typischer amerikanischer Hippiemusik aus dieser Zeit mit Soul- und Gospeleinflüssen und Rhythm and Blues liebt, der wird an der Platte seine Freude haben.
