Unter der Führung von Randy California (den Spitznamen bekam Randy von Jimi Hendrix himself verliehen, als er mit The Blue Flames jammte) war Spirit eine Free Form Kuriosität, die sich in den Hippie Sixties und darüber hinaus großer Beliebtheit erfreute. Mit ihrer Kombination aus Jazz, Rock, Prog, Folk und indianischen Elemente waren Spirit seinerzeit eine der beliebtesten Bands unter der Sonne Kaliforniens. Das selbstbetitelte Debüt ist ein grandioses Beispiel ihrer Vielseitigkeit, die zur Blaupause weiterer Releases wie zum Beispiel "The Family That Plays Together" führte.
