Iron Butterfly were formed in San Jose, California in 1966 as a hard-rock band, establishing themselves and gaining a solid following supporting groups such as The Doors and Jefferson Airplane. One of the biggest and surprising success stories of the progressive music revolution of the late Sixties, Iron Butterfly can claim to be the originators of 'heavy' music when they released their aptly-titled debut album 'Heavy' in 1968. On that album they introduced what was to become their at times almost overwhelming trademark sound, with its heavy guitar riffs and thundering drums. Their follow-up album in the same year, the acid-rock classic n-A-Gadda-Da-Vida' (In The Garden Of Eden), went on to become Atlantic Records' biggest-grossing albums in its day, selling in excess of three million copies.
