Nach diversen Klassik-Exkursionen veröffentlichte Frank Zappa Ende 1984 mit "Them or Us" wieder ein Rock-Album. Die 14 Original-Songs der Doppel-LP hat er mit zwei Covern eingerahmt: erstens der Doo-Wop-Perle "The Closer You Are" der Channels, zweitens "Whippin´ Post" der Allman Brothers Band. Wieder einmal hat Zappa altes Material recycelt und erneuert: "Sinister Footwear II" klingt an den Stoner-Jazz-Rock von "RDNZL" an; "Planet of my Dreams" borgt sich ein bisschen etwas von "Hunchentoot". Aktuell bekommt die MTV-Generation auf "Be In My Video" ihr Fett weg. Soundtechnisch hört man der LP stark die 80er an (ähnlich wie davor "The Man from Utopia" und später "Frank Zappa Meets the Mothers of Prevention" klingt "Them or Us" kristallklar und trocken). "Stevie´s Spanking", ein Showcase seines Rhythmus-Gitarristen Steve Vai, ist womöglich der beste Rocksong aus Zappas vierter Schaffensperiode.
