Jiles Richardson wurde zuerst als DJ bei dem texanischen Sender KTRM bekannt, bevor er im Jahre 1957 seine eigenen ersten Aufnahmen machte. Er schrieb zum Beispiel auch " Running Bear", der Johnny Preston 1959 zu einem seiner Charterfolge verhalf.
Schließlich änderte er auch seinen Namen in Big Bopper und tourte mit Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens und Dion & The Belmonts auf der Winter Dance Party Tour im Januar und Februar 1959.
