While rooted in the mystical music of Islamic Sufism, Dhafer Youssef's music draws from different influences including jazz, electronics, and rock. With his deeply affecting vocal style, a straight approach on the oud (the Arabic lute), charming Arab-colored compositions, spacey electric lounge vibes and a variety of fusion sounds, Tunesian Dhafer Youssef is among today's shooting stars in this crossover field. "It's music that tethers Third World beats to First World technology, a thin cross-cultural membrane connecting the ancient with the modern, the sacred with the profane," Time Out wrote in fall 2002 when Youssef's band played The Spitz in London. Youssef's last album "Electric Sufi" was among the most-admired crossover albums in 2001. A combination of Arab ingredients and jazz instrumentation with current rhythms and loops and ambient sounds, the album infuses cutting-edge electronics into deep spirituality. German Rolling Stone described it as "hardcore meditation music with a buzzing intensity." Wellknown British critic Chris Parker wrote: "It is the background of percussion and electronic sounds that makes this music so distinctive. Juxtaposing gently slinky pieces with jaunty scurries and occasional funky shuffles, the rhythm section simultaneously imaginatively embellishes a fascinating and entirely original set from a highly individual composer and instrumentalist."
With "Digital Prophecy" Dhafer Youssef reaches a new level. His composing, singing and oud playing are enthralling as ever – and the echo of ancient mysticism is even deepened by the Indian flute sounds of bansuri master Ronu Majumdar who is best known for his collaborations with Ravi Shankar, Trilok Gurtu, Ry Cooder and others. Embedded into the electric sounds of Norwegian trend setters Eivind Aarset and Rune Arnesen (known from Nils Petter Molvaer's band), keyboard wizard Bugge Wesseltoft and his sampling partner Jan Bang and the warm acoustic bass notes of Dieter Ilg, Dhafer's music gains a trance-like chill-out oriental groove quality that will thrill the advanced world music listener and also fits a relaxed club lounge situation. It's Dhafer Youssef at his hypnotic best.
