Nikolaj Rimsky-Korssakoff komponierte diese zauberhafte Oper nach einem Libretto von Nikolaj Gogol, in der der gutaussehende Schmied Wakula die reiche Bauerntochter Oksana heiraten will, die ihrerseits verlangt, dass er ihr zuerst die Schuhe der Zarin bringt. Währenddessen sammelt eine Hexe auf ihrem Besen die Sterne ein und der Teufel stiehlt den Mond – dämonische Kräfte, die versuchen, diese romantische Verbindung zu verhindern. In Rimsky-Korssakoffs Märchenoper gehen Zauber und Aufklärung eine glückliche Verbindung ein, und die Financial Times bezeichnete diese Inszenierung der Oper Frankfurt als »ein perfektes saisonales Tonikum«.
