Bruchs' Liebe zum Lied in der Symphonik

Obwohl Max Bruch ein lebhaftes Interesse für die Vokalmusik – insbesondere für das Volkslied – hegte, sind seine bedeutendsten Werke eher auf dem Gebiet der Instrumentalmusik (Symphonien, Konzerte) zu finden. Aber die hier zusammengestellten symphonischen Werke zeugen auch eindeutig für seine »Liebe zum Liede«. In ihnen spiegelt sich zumindest eine der Faktoren, die für Bruch die kompositorische Inspiration liefern sollten: »Erstens ein schönes Bild, zweitens eine schöne Lanschaft, drittens ein schönes Weib«. Ob es die Serenade nach schwedischen Volksmelodien, die fantasievollen und farbigen Orchestersuiten aus den schwedischen Tänze oder die Suite nach russischen Volksmelodien sind – immer zeichnet er zauberhafte und romantische musikalische Landschaften.

Although Max Bruch maintained a lively interest in vocal music and in the folk song in particular, his most significant works are to found in the field of instrumental music (symphonies, concertos). The symphonic compositions brought together here, however, clearly attest to his »love for the lied.« They reflect at least one of the factors regarded by him as the sources and suppliers of compositional inspiration: »First, a pretty picture; second, a pretty landscape; and third, a pretty woman.« Whether the Serenade after Swedish Folk Melodies, the highly imaginative and colorful Orchestral Suites on Swedish Dances, or the Suite after Russian Folk Songs, Bruch always depicts enchanting and romantic musical landscapes.
