Unter Händels siebzehn englischen Oratorien ist Theodora (1750) einzigartig. Die Geschichte ist nicht der Bibel entnommen, sie spielt in der christlichen Zeit, es gibt keinen nationalen Triumph und sie endet nicht in Freude. Am Ende sind Held und Heldin tot, die Gemeinschaft, mit der sich das Publikum identifiziert, ist in Lebensgefahr, und der Schlusschor steht in einer Molltonart. Als Musikdrama ist es der direkte Vorfahre der Dialogues des Carmélites. Im Alter von 65 Jahren schuf Händel ein Werk, das für die meisten seiner Zuhörer zu radikal und komplex war. Heute gilt Theodora als »Oper für den denkenden Menschen«, die sowohl zutiefst anregend als auch kraftvoll bewegend ist.
