Es ist ironisch und sicherlich kein Zufall, dass die erste große, komplette Oper in englischer Sprache 1743 von Georg Friedrich Händel – einem deutschen Immigranten – komponiert wurde. Dieser näherte sich gerade dem Höhepunkt seines Schaffens; dies allerdings in selbstauferlegter Zurückgezogenheit von der toxischen Londoner Opernszene. »Semele« ist weder eine herkömmliche, »ordentlich inszenierte« Oper (Händel führte sie trotz ausführlicher Szenen-Anweisungen nur konzertant auf) noch ein »frommes« Oratorium, auf einer alttestamentarischen Geschichte beruhend. Stattdessen wählte Händel eine profane, auf Ovid zurückgehende Geschichte, in der Götter und Sterbliche auf derselben Ebene agieren. Sie benehmen sich schlecht und leidenschaftlich auf eine Art und Weise, mit der jeder etwas anfangen kann. »Semele« war eine neue Form des Musikdramas, die sich der besten Charakteristiken der italienischen Oper bediente und diese mit der englischen Masque- und Semi-Opera-Tradition verband. Die Partitur enthält unwiderstehliche Solo-Arien – darunter virtuose Herzschlag-Momente, andere lyrisch, sinnlich und bewegend –, Ensembles, Duette, begleitete Rezitative und (anders als seine offiziellen Opern) imposante Chöre. Noch mehr als damals, vor nunmehr fast 40 Jahren, als ich das Werk erstmals aufführte und aufnahm, habe ich heute das Gefühl, dass »Semeles« Zeit nun endlich gekommen ist. (John Eliot Gardiner)
