Maometto II is considered Rossini's most radical and innovative opera, with its elaborate dramatic structure and artful transformation of a heroic conflict between two enemies into a love drama. The whole thing is set to music with probably the most beautiful melodies he has ever composed.
While the conventional Venetian version of the 1822 opera features an overture and a happy end, the present production from Bad Wildbad presents the rarely performed original Neapolitan version of Maometto II, which culminates in the suicide of the protagonist.
