Hopkinson Smith, einer der Großmeister auf der Laute und anderer Zupfinstrumente, gilt als herausragender Interpret von Musik der Renaissance und des Barock. Für seine mehr als 25 Aufnahmen gewann er zahlreiche Preise. Sein neues Album »Mad Dog« widmet Smith den englischen Komponisten des elisabethanischen Zeitalters, namentlich John Dowland, Anthony Holborne, John Johnson, William Byrd und Gregorio Huwet. Da viele der Stücke ohne Titel überliefert wurden, ließ sich Smith von ihrem Charakter inspirieren und kreierte für sie neue Namen, so »Mad Dog« für das Titelstück von John Holborne. Unterm Strich glänzt die CD durch wunderbar intime Einspielungen, die in ihrer filigranen Schönheit emotional komplex, ausdrucksstark und detailversessen interpretiert werden.
