Händels dramatische Theodora in Luxusbesetzung
»Mit einer Luxusbesetzung für Händels Theodora lockte die Philharmonie Essen die Liebhaber barocker Musik und Oratorien«, schrieb Das Opernglas begeistert von einem hochkarätigen Cast, der noch in den Nebenrollen mit Weltstars aufwartet wie der Mezzosopranistin Joyce DiDonato und dem Tenor Michael Spyres. Die konzertante Aufführung mit dem Ensemble Il Pomo d’Oro unter Leitung von Maxim Emelyanychev erscheint nun als professioneller Mitschnitt und setzt neue Maßstäbe für Händels selten gespieltes Oratorium.
Als reifes Alterswerk des Komponisten verzichtet Theodora gänzlich auf Effekthascherei und äußere Dramatik. Händel interessierte das Seelendrama, er deckt in seiner Musik die feinsten Gefühlsregungen auf.
