Didone Abbandonata war der vielleicht größte Erfolg in der relativ kurzen Karriere des Opernkomponisten Leonardo Vinci. Er war ein Musiker, der ein geradezu abenteuerliches Leben führte, glaubt man den wenigen gesicherten biografischen Angaben, die die Musikwissenschaft bis heute über ihn zusammengetragen hat.
Didone wurde während der Karnevalssaison 1726 in Roms Teatro delle Dame uraufgeführt. Es war der Start einer fruchtbaren Zusammenarbeit zwischen Vinci und Pietro Metastasio, dem führenden Librettisten seiner Zeit. Innerhalb der folgenden vier Jahre schrieb Metastasio nicht weniger als fünf neue Libretti für Leonardo Vinci.
Didone Abbandonata kommt heute nur selten auf die Bühne. Diese Vorstellung des Teatro di Firenze findet einen überzeugenden Kompromiss zwischen historisierender und moderner Inszenierung. Die Weltersteinspielung dieses Werks auf DVD markiert die eindrucksvolle Wiederbelebung eines Opern-Meisterwerks des frühen 18. Jahrhunderts.
