Dies ist die Fassung von I Capuleti e i Montecchi für die Scala, wo sie am 26. Dezember 1830 uraufgeführt wurde, mit zwei Frauenstimmen in den Rollen von Romeo und Julia.
Normalerweise wird diese Oper mit einem Tenor als Romeo aufgeführt, aber an der Scala fand Bellini eine andere Sängertruppe vor, die ihn dazu zwang, nicht den Krieger en travesti nach rossinischer Manier (wie Tancredi, Arsace, Malcolm) zu besetzen, sondern einen rein weiblichen Romeo, glühend und autoritär, aber gleichzeitig auch schmächtig, sinnlich und weich.
Die Wahl dieses Capuleti für das Festival von Martina Franca 2005 war auch durch die Verfügbarkeit von Patrizia Ciofi bedingt. Diese große Spezialistin des romantischen Belcanto hatte nie die Rolle der Giulietta in Capuleti angeboten bekommen, eine Rolle, die für ihre stimmliche Begabung absolut ideal ist.
