Robert Schumann: Orgelwerke on CD

Zum Schumann-Jahr legt audite mit dieser Wiederveröffentlichung sämtliche Werke des Jubilars für Pedalflügel vor. "Am 24. April [1845] erhielten wir ein Pedal unter den Flügel zur Miete, was uns viel Vergnügen schaffte. Der Zweck war uns hauptsächlich, für das Orgelspiel zu üben. Robert fand aber bald ein höheres Interesse für dies Instrument und komponierte einige Skizzen und Studien für den Pedalflügel, die gewiss großen Anklang als etwas ganz Neues finden werden." schreibt Clara Schumann in ihrem Tagebuch. Eine erste Gruppe von Werken für diesen interessanten instrumentalen Zwitter, der auch am Leipziger Konservatorium für angehende Organisten eingeführt war, aber auf Dauer keinen Platz in der Musikpraxis fand, stellte Schumann im Mai 1845 fertig und bemerkte dazu: "Offen gesagt, ich lege einiges Gewicht auf die Idee, und glaube, daß sie mit der Zeit einen neuen Schwung in die Claviermusik bringen könnte. Ganz wundervolle Effecte lassen sich damit machen." Alle Werke für Pedalflügel - die "Skizzen" op. 58, die "Studien" op. 56 und die "Sechs Fugen über den Namen BACH" für Orgel oder Pedalflügel op. 60 - entstanden in Schumanns Phase der "Fugenpassion", wie er es selbst nannte, im Jahr 1845. Sie sind geprägt von strengem Stil, der von seiner tiefen Verehrung gegenüber Johann Sebastian Bach zeugt. Auf der vorliegenden CD werden die Kompositionen auf der historischen Walcker-Orgel in Hoffenheim dargestellt. Andreas Rothkopf studierte Klavier, Orgel und Dirigieren an den Musikhochschulen in Saarbrücken, Köln und Paris. Als Organist erhielt er bei nationalen und internationalen Wettbewerben zahlreiche Preise und Auszeichnungen. Konzertreisen als Organist und Pianist sowie Einladungen als Lehrer und Juror führten ihn durch ganz Europa, Israel, den Vorderen Orient, Südamerika und Japan. Seit 1986 ist Andreas Rothkopf Professor für Orgel an der Hochschule für Musik Saar.

On the occasion of the 200th anniversary of Schumann's birth audite presents with this re-issue his complete works for pedal piano. "On 24 April [1845] we received a pedal for our piano on hire, which gave us great pleasure. It was primarily intended for practicing organ playing. But Robert soon developed a greater interest in this instrument and composed some sketches and studies for the pedal piano which will certainly be greeted with enthusiasm as something utterly new", wrote Clara Schumann in her diary. In May 1845 Schumann finished a first group of works for the pedal piano he wrote: "To be truthful, I am pretty confident in this instrument and feel that, in time, it might bring new impulses to piano music. Wonderful effects can be made with." Although this interesting instrumental hybrid was used for example at the Leipzig Conservatory as a practice instrument for organ students, it did not manage to find a permanent place in musical practice. All works for pedal piano - the "Sketches" Op. 58, the "Studies" Op. 56 and the "Six Fugues on the name BACH" for Organ or Pedal Piano Op. 60 - originate in Schumann's phase of "fugal passion", as he himself put it, in 1845. They are characterized by a severe style, which also testifies to Schumann's profound veneration of Johann Sebastian Bach. On the present CD the works are interpreted on the historic Walcker Organ in Hoffenheim/ Germany. Andreas Rothkopf studied piano, organ and conducting at the music conservatoires in Saarbrücken, Cologne and Paris. As an organist, he has received many prizes and awards at national and international competitions. Engagements as an organist and pianist as well as invitations to teach and judge have taken him all over Europe, Israel, the Middle East, South America and Japan. Since 1986 Andreas Rothkopf is Professor of Organ at the Hochschule für Musik Saar.

His musical conceptions and superb technique combine with scrupulous attention to details of rhythm and agogic accent (very tricky pieces!), fine choice of registrations, and sensitivity for Schumann's wonderful style, to produce an outstanding recorded document. (American Record Guide)
