Sinclair Lewis’ Skandalroman von 1927 spielt kurz vor dem Ersten Weltkrieg und handelt von religiöser Verblendung, verbotener Liebe und zehrender Rache. Aus diesem Stoff haben der Komponist Robert Aldridge und sein Librettist Herschel Garfein eine „grandios schmissige und leicht zugängliche Oper“ (Opera News) voller Hymnen Gospel-Songs, Märsche und Tänze kreiert, die die Epoche von Gershwin und Copland wieder zum Leben erweckt. Diese rein amerikanische Opernproduktion in der Tradition von Porgy und Bess begeisterte in den USA bereits ein großes Publikum. Mit ihrer gehaltvollen Handlung und der hochkarätigen Besetzung hat Elmer Gantry das Zeug zum Evergreen einer neuen Generation.
