Von Hahns Bühnenwerken überlebte allenfalls die Operette "Ciboulette", die Chansons des Busenfreundes von Marcel Proust blieben dagegen im Schatzkämmerlein von Kennern und Könnern. Obwohl meist für Männerstimme geschrieben, erfaßt Susan Graham mit untadeliger Idio- matik ihren spezifischen Reiz. Und wird dabei kongenial von Roger Vignoles begleitet. ..eine "Heure exquise".

Exquisite songs

I knew Hahn only by name, as a friend of Proust. And I admit I was prejudiced, thinking that the dandy belonged to the polished kitsch of the French salon music. These exquisite songs prove the contrary and have urged me to look out for some more of Hahn’s work. If you are not moved by the song ‘A Chloris’ (what an opener !), well, there is something wrong with your ears or your heart. Susan Graham has just the right voice and her French is flawless. Every song is an excellent example of the typical French charm, elegance and grace. This music, comparable to the best Fauré has written, evokes a paradise lost, depicted in the films by Yves Robert (‘Le château de ma mère’ and ‘La gloire de mon père’) or by Claude Berri‘s ‘Jean de Florette’ and ‘Manon des sources’. A wonderful trip into nostalgia.
