Nach unzähligen Partien im Tenorfach präsentiert Plácido Domingo auf seinem neuen Album jetzt Baritonarien des italienischen Komponisten: Arien aus Macbeth, Rigoletto, Un ballo in Maschera, La Traviata, Simon Boccanegra, Ernani, Il Trovatore, Don Carlo und La Forza del Destino.

Plácido Domingo offenbart bei dieser Aufnahme nicht nur neue Stimmfarben, sondern entdeckt und erarbeitet für sich neue Charaktere der Opernliteratur. Dies ist eine Hommage an den Komponisten, dessen 200. Geburtstag dieses Jahr von der Welt gefeiert wird, und ein Geschenk an alle Fans, die Plácido Domingos Schaffenskraft mit diesem Album ganz neue Facetten abgewinnen können.

Das neu erarbeitete Repertoire bringt für ihn bisher unbekannte Stimmfarben zu Tage, die es auch für Domingo neu zu entdecken galt: "Es ist wie die Palette eines Malers, auf der man plötzlich neue Farben entdeckt. Da mischen sich Stimmklang und Tonhöhe zu neuen Ausdrucksformen, die einfach spannend sind - für den Sänger mindestens genauso wie für den Zuhörer." For the very first time, Plácido Domingo records a complete album of baritone repertoire and assembles Verdi´s most beloved baritone arias from Rigoletto, La Traviata and Simon Boccangera - just to mention a few.

Having performed all of Verdi´s great tenor arias, Domingo feels excited to now be able to explore the darker characters of Verdi’s opera.

In 2009 Plácido Domingo performed his first baritone title role as Simon Boccanegra at the Royal Opera House in London, which was soon followed by leading roles as Rigoletto, Francesco Foscari and Giorgio Germont from La Traviata. This year will see Domingo debut in the leading roles of Nabucco at the Metropolitan Opera New York and Conte di Luna from Il Trovatore at the State Opera in Berlin.

Contra to popular myth, the Maestro never started his career as a Baritone. In his early years, he mainly sang Zarzuelas where tenor parts usually lay lower than in the classical opera repertoire.

Considered to be THE Verdi tenor of his generation, Plácido Domingo presents now a new side of his vocal abilities, for which one may want to name him THE Verdi singer.
