Das 1984 erstmals veröffentlichte Album »Mamma« ist eine Sammlung italienischer Volkslieder, arrangiert und dirigiert vom amerikanischen Komponisten Henry Mancini, der selbst italienische Wurzeln hatte. In seinen Anmerkungen zu der Platte erklärte Pavarotti: »Ich bin mit diesen Liedern aufgewachsen, wie viele andere meiner Generation auch, und sie rufen den Klang meiner Kindheit wach«.

Das Album wird zum ersten Mal seit 1984 wieder auf Vinyl veröffentlicht, und zwar in einem neuen, remasterten HD-Sound. Als Grundlage dienten die Premaster-Bänder aus den Decca-Archiven, was den historischen Aufnahmen eine neue, faszinierende Dimension verleiht.
