Sechs der zwölf Sinfonien nach den Metamorphosen des Ovid sind in ihrer ursprünglichen Form erhalten geblieben. Sie wurden 1783 geschrieben und drei Jahre später in Wien der Öffentlichkeit vorgestellt, als Dittersdorf Gelegenheit hatte, die Stadt zur Uraufführung seines Oratoriums Giob zu besuchen.
Die Metamorphosen des römischen Dichters Ovid enthalten in ihren fünfzehn Büchern ein Kompendium der griechischen und römischen Mythologie und Legende. Trotz des Titels handelt es sich dabei nicht einfach um ein Buch der Veränderungen der lateinischen Hexameter, sondern um eine inspirierte und episodische Erzählung, in der die Geschichten nur lose miteinander verbunden sind: Ovid beginnt mit dem Chaos und geht bald in die vier Zeitalter der Welt über, die Gegenstand der ersten Dittersdorfer Sinfonie, der Sinfonia in C-Dur, Die vier Weltalter, waren.

Six of the twelve Symphonies after the Metamorphoses of Ovid survive in their original form. These were written in 1783and introduced to the public in Vienna three years later, when Dittersdorf had occasion to visit the city for the first performance of his oratorio Giob.
The Metamorphoses of the Roman poet Ovid contains, in its fifteen books, a compendium of Greek and Roman mythology and legend. In spite of the title, this is not simply a book of changes in Latin hexameters, but an inspired and episodic narrative, in which stories are only loosely connected one to the other .Opening with Chaos, Ovid soon moves on to the four ages of the world, the subject of the first of Dittersdorf's symphonies, the Sinfonia in C major, Die vier Weltalter.
