Im März 1847 fand die Uraufführung von Verdis
Shakespeare-Adaption „Macbeth“ in Florenz
statt. Bei dieser ersten Fassung haben sich
Verdi und seine Librettisten Piave und Maffei
eng an die literarische Vorlage gehalten,
wohingegen die zweite, revidierte Version, die
18 Jahre später in Paris aufgeführt wurde, viele
Veränderungen erfahren hat.
Dennoch ist die Pariser Fassung die heute bei weitem häufiger gespielte.
Mit dem Macbeth-Stoff, den in England zwar jedes Kind kannte, der in Italien jedoch mehr oder weniger unbekannt war und zudem keine wirkliche Liebesgeschichte enthält, ging Verdi ein großes Risiko ein.
Dennoch ist die Pariser Fassung die heute bei weitem häufiger gespielte.
