Und in der Tat, das fünfte der neunzehn Oratorien die Händel in England schrieb, zeigt eindrucksvoll, dass Musik und Wort auch ganz ohne optische Reize auskommt. Es entstand im Jahre 1738 in der Rekordzeit von ca. vier Wochen. Die Tinte auf den Notenblättern des „Saul“ war kaum getrocknet, als Händel vier Tage später seine Arbeit an „Israel in Ägypten“ aufnahm. Im Gegensatz zu seinen früheren Oratorien liegt in „Israel in Ägypten“ die Hauptpartie in der Verantwortung des Chores. Das Werk enthält nicht weniger als 28 doppel-chörige Abschnitte!
