Dabei bezieht sich Bellini nicht auf die Version von Shakespeare, sondern auf die noch frühere von Matteo Bandello. Die Familienfehde birgt immer wieder Momente größter Grausamkeit und Verzweiflung, denen Bellini eine Musik von höchster Klarheit und Eleganz entgegensetzt. Diese Spannung macht »I Capuleti e i Montecchi« zu einem Meisterwerk mit tiefgründigen Charakteren.
Die Besetzung wird von internationalen Stars wie Joyce und Nicole Cabell angeführt, die unglücklichen Liebenden Romeo und Giulietta verkörpern. Regisseur Vincent Boussard feiert mit dieser Oper sein US-Debüt, die musikalische Leitung hat Belcanto-Spezialist Riccardo Frizza, Der renommierte Mode-Designer Christian Lacroix zeigte bei den Kostümen seine ganze Kunstfertigkeit.
