Chip Taylor und Carrie Rodriguez sind seit ca. 10 Jahren große Fans von Bill Frisell, einer der aktuellen Jazz-Stars, die sich auch dem Country öffnen. Sie fragten ihn, ob er interessiert wäre, bei den Aufnahmen zu Red Dog Tracks teilzunehmen. Und Frisell sagte spontan zu. Im berühmten New Yorker Avatar-Studio trafen sie sich und nahmen „Red Dog Tracks“ in fünfköpfiger Besetzung auf. Alle Musiker spielten gemeinsam, ähnlich einem Konzert. Auf dem Album zu hören sind ausschließlich erste oder zweite Takes: Allein das macht die Harmonie der einzelnen Protagonisten deutlich, die zu einer extremen musikalischen Homogenität führte.
