In den fünf Jahren seit der Veröffentlichung seines Debüt-Albums »Policy« tourte Will Butler solo wie auch als Mitglied von Arcade Fire durch die Welt, veröffentlichte das Live-Album »Friday Night« sowie Arcade Fires erstes internationales Nummer 1-Album »Everything Now«. Er erwarb seinen Master-Abschluss in Public Policy in Harvard, veranstaltete eine Reihe von Tourneen durch Rathäuser mit lokalen Themen wie Polizei, Gefängnisreform, bezahlter Krankenstand der Gemeinde und Wahlrecht und verbrachte natürlich Zeit mit seinen drei Kindern.
Neben all dem fand Will Butler außerdem Zeit und Inspiration, sein zweites Solo-Album »Generations« zu schreiben und im Keller seines Hauses in Brooklyn aufzunehmen. Das Tracking endete im März 2020, als sich New York wegen der Corona-Pandemie plötzlich im Lock-Down befand. Die Hälfte des Albums wurde in Montreal vom langjährigen Arcade Fire-Engineer Mark Lawson gemischt, die andere Hälfte von dem in Brooklyn ansässigen Produzenten Shiftee.
»My first record, ›Policy‹, was a book of short stories«, sagt Butler. »›Generations‹ is more of a novel-despairing, funny, a little bit epic... A big chunk of this record is asking: What's my place in American history? What's my place in America's present? Both in general-as a participant, as we all are, in the shit that's going down-but, also extremely particularly: me as Will Butler, rich person, white person, Mormon, Yankee, parent, musician of some sort, I guess. What do I do? What can I do? The record asks that question over and over, even if it's not much for answers.«
