Es ist ein halbes Jahrhundert her, seit der britische Folk Rock sich auf den Weg machte, den Thron der Popularität zu erklimmen. Die Interpreten betraten Neuland und inspirierten eine ganze Szene, die in den späten sechziger / frühen siebziger Jahren ihren Höhepunkt erreichte. Gegenkulturelle Ikonoklasten wie die Incredible String Band hatten elementaren Einfluss auf eine ganze Reihe von Bands, die heute als Acid-Folk eingestuft werden.
In den frühen siebziger Jahren war der britische Folk Rock zu einem verkaufsträchtigen »Rohstoff« geworden. Die Interpreten, die auf den Folk-Seiten der britischen Musikwochenblätter mit Lob überschüttet wurden, produzierten Top Ten-Alben am Fließband. Zu ihnen gehörten Alan Hulls Band Lindisfarne, The Strawbs, Gerry Rafferty, Ralph McTell und mit Iain Matthews ein weiterer Fairport-Flüchtling.
Auf 3 CDs in einer Clamshell-Box mit einem 40-Seiten umfassenden Booklet dokumentiert Strangers In The Room diese äußerst fruchtbare Zeit, die schnell zu einem glorreichen stilistischen Schmelztiegel wurde. Das Set bietet viele der Hauptkünstler der Szene und wirft einen breiteren Blick auf das Gesamtbild.
