»Only God Was Above Us« ist das fünfte Studioalbum von Vampire Weekend. Das Album ist inspiriert von und durchdrungen von der Essenz der Heimatstadt der Band, New York City, obwohl es auf der ganzen Welt aufgenommen wurde, von New York über Los Angeles bis London und Tokio. Produziert wurde das Album von Ezra Koenig und seinem langjährigen Mitarbeiter Ariel Rechtshaid. Der Titel des Albums ist direkt dem Albumcover entnommen, einem Foto, das der Fotograf Steven Siegel 1988 auf einem U-Bahn-Friedhof in New Jersey aufgenommen hat.
»Only God Was Above Us« enthält universelle Themen, die von dem Drang, die Welt, in der wir leben, zu hinterfragen, bis hin zur Suche nach Frieden reichen, der nur durch Akzeptanz gefunden werden kann. Das Album ist zu gleichen Teilen so direkt und komplex wie alles, was die Band je veröffentlicht hat, so schön und melodisch, wie sie je geklungen hat, aber auch in ihrer rauesten Form.
