Der gerne als »afro-brasilianischer Nick Drake« bezeichnete Sänger und Gitarrist verbindet Klänge seiner südamerikanischen Heimat mit dem afrikanischen Erbe seiner Ahnen zu beseelten, von universeller Philosophie durchzogenen folkigen Song-Perlen.

Wer bei Brasilien automatisch an Copacabana, Karneval in Rio und die zum Klischee gewordene Lebensfreude denken muss, wird bei Tigana Santana eine Überraschung erleben: Der 30-jährige ist ein Freund der leisen Töne, der sich in seinen Liedern mit existenziellen Fragen befasst. Geboren in einem afrobrasilianischen Viertel in Salvador da Bahia, ist der von World Music-Kennern als legitimer Nachfolger eines Joao Gilberto oder Ali Farka Touré gehandelte Musiker unüberhörbar auf dem Weg zu seinen Wurzeln.

»Tempo & Magma« ist das dritte Album, welches der Künstler im Rahmen des Unesco World Music Programs in Dakar mit einer handvoll erlesener Musiker aufnahm. Ob Senegal, Mali, Guinea, jeder brachte seine eigenen Einflüsse und seltene regionale Instrumente wie Kirrin, Riti, N’Goni und die Toxoro Flöte ein.

Unter Leitung der beiden Produzenten Andreas Unge und Sebastian Notini, welche ebenfalls als Musiker auf diesem Album agieren, entstand ein warmes und sehr schlüssiges Werk. Als Gastsänger sind die junge brasilianische Sängerin Céu und sogar die Candomblé Hohepriesterin Mae Stella De Oxossi zu hören.

Tiganá Santana is a Brazilian singer in search of his Afro‐Brazilian roots, who reveals with his music his own modern and ancestral sight of the universe. He is one of those rare Brazilians who partly composes in African languages, refreshing our ears with airy harmonies.

Tiganá Santana’s third album Tempo & Magma is the result of a deeply rooted musical and cultural convergence in Senegal. At the end of Santana’s artistic residency at the UNESCO world music program, he recorded in Dakar with a carefully selected group of musicians – each bringing something unique to the table through their different backgrounds in Mali, Guinea‐Conakry and the many varied and distinct Senegalese cultures. The base for this once‐in‐a‐lifetime collaboration was the use of rare regional instruments like kirrin, riti, n’goni and the peul flute toxoro. The entire album have been crafted through a deep involvement from all participating artists under the guidance of Swedish producers Andreas Unge and Sebastian Notini, who both also contributed as musicians throughout the project.

The Brazilian flavour is not lost on Tempo & Magma as Santana makes room for exciting singer Céu and also highlights his own ties with Mãe Stella de Oxossi, the 90‐year old high priestess of the Afro‐Brazilian religion Candomblé. The combination of two aspects of the African diaspora on this new release is a clear artistic and political statement and typical of Tiganá Santana’s work and creative ambition.
