Die Band trat erstmals 1965 mit einer Mischung aus rauem, explosivem R&B auf den Plan. »Freeway Madness« von 1972 ist ihr sechstes Album, und markierte einen Richtungswechsel im Sound mit Bassist Wally Waller als Produzent.
Rückblickend wirkt es wie der erste Teil einer musikalischen Trilogie, zusammen mit »Silk Torpedo« und »Savage Eye«. Phil May und Pete Tolson schrieben die meisten Songs gemeinsam, mit üppigen Harmonien im Überfluss und einem insgesamt amerikanischeren, radiotauglichen Sound.
