»Preservation Act 1« ist ein Konzeptalbum und die 12. Studio-LP von The Kinks, die ursprünglich am 16. November 1973 bei RCA erschienen ist.
»Preservation« ist das ehrgeizigste Projekt der Band - eine Rockoper, die die charmante Kleinstadtnostalgie von Village Green als Vorlage nutzt, um die gesamte Gesellschaft und ihre Funktionsweise darzustellen. Der epische Opener »Morning Song« gibt den Rahmen und die Stimmung für das Album vor, gefolgt von einem klassisch klingenden Dave Davies-Riff, »Daylight«, das Themen und Klänge eines ihrer bekanntesten und hochgelobten Alben, »The Village Green Preservation Society«, aufgreift.
Herausragende Stücke sind das liebenswert träge »Sitting in the Midday Sun« und das wunderschöne »Sweet Lady Genevieve« - beides starke Anwärter auf übersehene Meisterwerke von Ray Davies. Ein von der Kritik hochgelobtes Album, das der Rolling Stone seinerzeit als »ein sehr hörenswertes, angenehmes Album« bezeichnete.
