»The Painted Word« ist ein ernsthafteres Album als die drei Vorgänger, aber nicht weniger charmant. 1984 favorisierten die TVP's einen subtilen, sehr stark von Velvet Underground beeinflussten, Indie-Pop Sound.
Das großartige und oft gecoverte »Someone to Share My Life With« ist von Herzen kommend und schon allein die Anschaffung wert. Der Klassiker des Albums aber ist »Stop And Smell The Roses«, ein lyrischer Song über die Romantik des Leidwesens ansich. Der Protestsong »A Sense Of Belonging« war damals Single der Woche im Melody Maker (Zitat: »clumsy and ugly and brutal and honest and it cuts and hurts and it's beautiful. Listen and cry for shame.«).
Das Album beflügelte Alan McGee, den Gründer des Creation Labels und Entdecker von Oasis zu folgender Aussage: »›The Painted Word‹ ist, neben Big Stars ›Sisters Lovers‹ und allen Nick Drake LPs, eines der besten emotional introspektiven Alben, die ich je gehört habe. Dan Treacys Songs zerreißen mich. Dies ist ihr bester Moment. Beides, der Humor und die Tragik der Songs sind bewundernswert.« Dem ist nichts hinzuzufügen.
