Bevor sich Status Quo dem Hard Rock zuwendeten, waren sie soundtechnisch eher dem Psychedelic Rock zuzuordnen. Das zweite Album von 1969 beweist dies eindrücklich.
Die Band rund um Gitarrist Francis Rossi, der bis heute Mitglied ist, wurde 1962 gegründet, firmierte aber erst ab 1967 als Status Quo. Davor waren sie als »The Scorpions«, »The Spectres« und »Traffic« aktiv. An »Spare Parts« wirkte erstmals auch Bob Young mit. Der Roadie avancierte zum Songwriter der Band und wird als inoffizielles fünftes Mitglied der Band angesehen.
