Das Album, veröffentlicht im Januar 1968, folgte auf den großen internationalen Erfolg der Band mit ihrer Debüt-Single »A Whiter Shade of Pale« und der darauf folgenden Single »Homburg«.
»Procol Harum« ist eines der besten Alben aus dieser Zeit und besticht durch das exzellente Songwriting von Gary Brooker und Keith Reid, sowie der Versiertheit der Musiker Gary Brooker (Gesang, Piano), Robin Trower (Leadgitarre), David Knights (Bass), B. J. Wilson (Drums) und Matthew Fisher (Hammond Orgel).
Das Resultat war eine Sammlung an Songs, die in ihrer Einzigartigkeit bahnbrechend war, obwohl Produzent Denny Cordell darauf bestand, den Mix in Mono zu halten.
