Das Album »Salty Dog« wurde im Juni 1969 veröffentlicht und folgte auf den großen internationalen Erfolg der Debüt Single »A Whiter Shade of Pale« und den beiden ausgezeichneten Procol Harum Alben »Shine On Brightly« und »Procol Harum«.
Gary Brooker und Keith Reid brachten das Songwriting »A Salty Dog« auf Perfektions-Niveau, was bei Titeln wie »The Devil Came From Kansas«, »Wreck of the Hesperus«, »The Milk of Human Kindness« besonders zur Geltung kommt.
