Die insgesamt elf Songs stammen weitestgehend aus der Feder von David Gilmour, der zusammen mit Bob Ezrin auch für die Produktion verantwortlich zeichnete. Die Aufnahmen fanden in Gilmours Hausbootstudio Astoria und in den Mayfair Studios in London statt.
Der Titel »A Momentary Lapse Of Reason« ist eine Zeile aus dem Song »One Slip«, der auf dem Longplayer enthalten ist.
Das Album erreichte in Großbritannien und den USA Platz drei, in Deutschland sogar Platz zwei der Charts.
