Die Patti Smith Group veröffentlichte Wave, ihr viertes Studioalbum, im Jahr 1979. Die Leadsingle des Albums "Frederick" war Patti Smiths damaligem zukünftigen Ehemann Fred "Sonic" Smith von der Band MC5 gewidmet.
Bevor die Vorbereitungen für den Nachfolger des Erfolgsalbums "Easter" begannen, lernte Patti Smith den Ex-MC5-Gitarristen Fred "Sonic" Smith kennen - das Paar verliebte sich schnell und heiratete schließlich. Bald darauf entschied Smith, dass sie sich ganz aus dem Musikgeschäft zurückziehen wollte, um eine Familie zu gründen, stimmte aber zu, ein letztes Album aufzunehmen, 79's Wave, produziert von Todd Rundgren. Obwohl Patti Smith später aus dem Ruhestand kam, war Wave das letzte Album, auf dem die komplette, ursprüngliche Patti Smith Group zu hören war.
