“No Thyself” ist das erste neue Magazine Material seit 30 Jahren. Dies ist das fünfte Studioalbum der Band mit zehn Tracks, die aus der allerobersten Schublade stammen.
Der Magazine Frontmann Howard Devoto gründete mit Pete Shelley die Buzzcocks, nachdem die beiden 1976 nach London gereist waren, um die Sex Pistols zu sehen. Devoto verließ die Band 1977 nach der bahnbrechenden „Spiral Scratch?“-EP und gründete Magazine. Die wiederum veröffentlichten vier Alben, bevor sie sich 1981 trennten – noch heute nennen Morrissey, Jarvis Cocker, U2, Muse und Radiohead Magazine als Einfluss.
Als Vorreiter der New Wave des Post-Punk stützte sich der Sound von Magazine auf die Keyboards von Dave Formula und die bahnbrechende Gitarrenarbeit von John McGeoch; die Band war auf der Höhe der Zeit. Im Februar 2009 kamen die ursprünglichen Magazine Mitglieder Howard Devoto, Barry Adamson, John Doyle und Dave Formula mit dem Luxuria Kollaborateur Noko zusammen, um ein paar Konzert in England zu spielen. Magazine standen das erste Mal seit 1980 wieder zusammen auf einer Bühne. Die „Real Life+Thereafter?“- Shows waren schnell ausverkauft und wurden von Kritikern mit Lorbeeren behängt. In diesem Jahr stieg die Band wieder in Sattel, als Morrissey sie zusammen mit den Stooges, Lou Reed und Patti Smith zum Hop Farm Festival einlud.
