»Automatic Midnight«, das erste Studioalbum der Hot Snakes, erschien im Jahr 2000. Sowohl die Band als auch das Album begannen als »Nebenprojekt« für John Reis 1999, als er eine Pause von seiner Hauptband Rocket From The Crypt genoss. Reis schrieb ein paar Songs und nahm sie zusammen mit dem Delta 72 Drummer Jason Kourkounis in San Diego auf. Auf der Suche nach einem Sänger, rief Reis Rick Froberg an, mit dem er zwischen 1986 und 1995 bei Pitchfork und bei Drive Like Jehu gespielt hatte. Ein Großteil des Materials aus diesen Sessions sollte schließlich zu »Automatic Midnight« werden. Der Rock’n’Roll-Sound der Band ist direkt, ungeschönt und unvorhersehbar.
