Das Gitarren- und Bass-Duo Gong Gong Gong entspringt der Pekinger Underground-Szene mit einer klaren Vision und einem kompromisslosen Sinn für das Wesentliche. Das Duo zapft eine Wellenlänge an, die musikalische Kulturen vereint und schöpft aus so unterschiedlichen Inspirationen wie Bo Diddley, kantonesischer Oper, westafrikanischem Wüstenblues, Drone und elektronischer Musik.
Trotz der Entscheidung der Band, auf traditionelle Rock-Percussion zu verzichten, verbinden sich auf ihrem Debütalbum Phantom Rythm die tuckernden Gitarren von Tom Ng mit den dröhnenden, harmoniebetonten Basslinien von Joshua Frank zu einer Aura aus geisterhaften Snare-Schlägen und Paukenschlägen. Über Franks rätselhaften Melodien singt Ng auf Kantonesisch und setzt abstrakte Geschichten über Absurdität, Zweifel, Begehren und Lust zusammen. Synchronisiert bis zur Telepathie, nutzen »the Gongs« ihre minimalistischen Werkzeuge und ihren eigenwilligen Spielstil, um die Vorstellungen von Rock n' Roll in Frage zu stellen und die Form auf das Wesentliche zu reduzieren: Rhythmus, Melodie und Härte.

The group unites musical cultures, drawing on inspirations as wide-ranging as Bo Diddley, Cantonese opera, West African desert blues, drone, and electronic music.
On their debut LP, Phantom Rhythm, the locomotive chug of Tom Ng's guitar combines with Joshua Frank's thumping, harmonics-laden bass lines to conjure an aura of ghostly snare hits and timpani overtones. Over Frank's enigmatic melodies, Ng sings in Cantonese, piecing together abstract tales of absurdity, doubt, desire, and lust. Synchronized to the point of near-telepathy, the band use their minimalistic tools and idiosyncratic playing style to challenge the notions of rock ›n‹ roll and strip the form down to its bare essentials: rhythm, melody, and grit.
