Mit »In Rock« oder auch »Deep Purple In Rock« veröffentlichte die legendäre britische Hardrockband vor gut 45 Jahren ihr viertes Studioalbum. Es ist gleichzeitig das erste Album in der klassischen MK-II-Besetzung, bestehend aus Sänger Ian Gillan, Ritchie Blackmore an der Gitarre, Jon Lord an der Hammondorgel, Roger Glover am Bass und Ian Paice am Schlagzeug.
Bis heute gilt »In Rock« als eines der ersten Heavy-Metal-Alben und als bahnbrechend für die stilistische Entwicklung von Deep Purple. Die Band festigte damit ihren typischen Sound, der besonders von Gillans Gesang und Blackmores markantem rifflastigen Gitarrenspiel geprägt wurde.
Es ist zudem das Album, mit dem Deep Purple der internationale Durchbruch gelang. In Deutschland landete die Platte sogar auf Platz 1 der Albumcharts.
Die wohl bekanntesten Singles waren das Vietnamkrieg kritisierende »Child in Time« sowie der Song »Speed King«. Beide gelten bis heute als richtungsweisend für spätere Rock- und Metalarten.
