Es erschien ursprünglich bereits im Juli 1993 und war das letzte Album in der Mk-II-Besetzung mit Sänger Ian Gillan und Gitarrenvirtuose Ritchie Blackmore sowie John Lord (Hammond-Orgel), Roger Glover (Bass) und Ian Paice (Schlagzeug), die ein Jahr zuvor ihre zweite Reunion gefeiert hatten.
»The Battle Rages On« landete in Großbritannien auf Platz 21, in Deutschland auf Platz 13 der Albumcharts. Es konnte jedoch auch mehrere Top-10-Platzierungen für sich verbuchen, zum Beispiel in Japan, Schweden, Österreich und der Schweiz.
Als Singles wurden die Songs »Anya«, »Time to Kill«, »Talk About Love« und der Titeltrack »The Battle Rages On« ausgekoppelt.
