Als Bob Marley 1979 sein elftes Studioalbum Survival veröffentlichte, war das für den damals 34-Jährigen ein klarer thematischer Richtungswechsel von seinen vorherigen Longplayern. Vor allem sein letztes Album Kaya war deutlich sanfter, optimistischer und selbstgenügsamer. Mancherorts wurde die Kritik laut, Marley singe nur noch über Liebe und Marihuana und wäre zu soft, zu mellow geworden.

Survival ist ein durch und durch politisches Album mit religiösem Unterbau und einem klaren Thema, das sich quer durch die Songs zieht. „Africa unite / ‘Cause we’re moving right out of Babylon / And we’re going to our fathers’ land“, singt Marley im Song Africa Unite. Und weiter: „How good and pleasant it would be / Before God and man / To see the unifications of all Africans“.
