Singer-Songwriter Billy Bragg veröffentlicht 2021 sein zehntes Studioalbum »A Million Things That Never Happened«, den Nachfolger von »Shine A Light: Field Recordings from the Great American Railroad« zusammen mit Joe Henry aus dem Jahr 2016.
Die Platte wurde von Romeo Stodart und Dave Izumi in den Echo Zoo Studios in Eastbourne, Sussex, produziert.
Mit »I Will Be Your Shield« erschien im Juli die erste Single von »A Million Things That Never Happened«, die für den 63-jährigen Briten von besonderer Bedeutung ist: »Für mich ist ›I Will Be Your Shield‹ das Herz und die Seele des Albums«, so Bragg in einem Statement. »Ich bin zu dem Schluss gekommen, dass Empathie die Währung der Musik ist – dass es unsere Aufgabe als Songwriter ist, den Menschen zu helfen, mit ihren Gefühlen zurechtzukommen, indem wir ihnen Beispiele dafür geben, wie andere mit einer ähnlichen Situation umgegangen sind, in der sich die Zuhörer befinden.« Bezogen auf die Corona-Pandemie sagt er weiter: »Nach dem, was wir alle durchgemacht haben, sollte die Idee, ein Schutzschild zu sein, physisch, emotional und psychologisch, mitschwingen«.
Und so ist »A Million Things That Never Happened« einerseits Billy Braggs Pandemie-Blues-Album, gleichzeitig aber auch eine Ode an die menschliche Widerstandskraft.
Insgesamt warten zwölf gefühlvolle Songs auf der Platte, eine Bragg-typische Mischung aus Country und Rock, Americana und Folk. Den Abschluss bildet das Lied »Ten Mysterious Photos That Can't Be Explained«, das der Musiker zusammen mit seinem Sohn Jack Valero schrieb.
