»Blood Money« basiert auf dem sozio-politischen Theaterstück »Woyzeck«, das ursprünglich von dem jungen deutschen Dichter Georg Buchner 1837 als sparsames, filmisches Stück geschrieben wurde und von der wahren Geschichte eines deutschen Soldaten inspiriert ist, der durch bizarre medizinische Experimente der Armee und Untreue in den Wahnsinn getrieben wurde, was ihn dazu brachte, seine Geliebte zu ermorden.

Zusammen mit seiner Frau und Mitarbeiterin Kathleen Brennan schrieb Waits Lieder für eine Avantgarde-Produktion von »Woyzeck« unter der Regie von Robert Wilson, die im November 2000 am Betty Nansen Theater in Kopenhagen uraufgeführt wurde und die dänische Version des Tony für das beste Musical gewann. Das Album schwankt zwischen Brutalität und Zärtlichkeit, zwischen stürmischen Rhythmen und romantischen Melodien.

Es ist eine düstere musikalische Abhandlung über den Zustand des Menschen, ein dunkles Sterblichkeitsspiel, bei dem Tin Pan Alley auf die Weimarer Republik trifft. »›Blood Money‹ ist aus Fleisch und Blut, erdverbunden«, sagt Waits. »Die Songs sind in der Realität verwurzelt: Eifersucht, Wut, das menschliche Fleischrad...Sie sind eher fleischlich. Blood Money is based on the socio / political play "Woyzeck," originally written by a young German poet Georg Buchner as a spare, cinematic piece in 1837 and inspired by the true story of a German soldier who was driven mad by bizarre army medical experiments and infidelity, which led him to murder his lover. Waits, along with wife and collaborator Kathleen Brennan, wrote songs for an avant-garde production of "Woyzeck" directed by Robert Wilson, which premiered in November 2000 at the Betty Nansen Theater in Copenhagen and went on to win Denmark's version of the Tony for Best Musical. The album careens from the brutal to the tender with assaulting rhythms and romantic melodies.
