Die Band hat ihren Namen der Präsidentengarde der haitianischen Diktators Papa Doc's angelehnt, wurde sie doch von dem geheimnisvollen und kühl klingenden Wortwahl angezogen.
Das Band-Line Up besteht aus Paul French, Dave Knowles (sax / flutes), Chris Gavin (guitars / bass) und Nigel Reveler (drums).
“Tonton Macoute” war das erste und einzige Album der Band, welches auf 1971 auf dem Neon-Label der RCA veröffentlicht wurde.

Sparkling performances from this uniquely British prog rock groups. Although the music never quite settles on one style, it nevertheless maintains a good humoured, joyous and inventive mood throughout the seven diverse and captivating tracks. The band borrowed their name from the Haitian dictator Papa Doc’s presidential guard and were, no doubt, attracted by its cool and mysterious sound. The line up includes singer Paul French, backed by Dave Knowles (sax and flutes), Chris Gavin (guitars and bass) and Nigel Reveler (drums). ‘Tonton Macoute’ was the band’s only album and one of the first released on RCA’s Neon label in 1971. Among the highlights are ‘Just Like A Stone’, that has some rocking piano and backbeat drums. ‘Don’t Make Me Cry’ is a real jazz fusion odyssey, while the spooky ‘Dreams’ is laden with vibraphone textures. The swinging ‘You Make My Jelly Roll’ has young French singing in Frank Sinatra mode. A real treat, recommended to all Prog fans.
